Matanuska Glacier

Matanuska Glacier

I couldn’t leave Alaska without experiencing the heart-pounding beauty of a glacier up close. With our two-week adventure nearing its end, my son Logan and I set our sights on the magnificent Matanuska Glacier. Unlike many others, this colossal ice field is accessible by land, making it the perfect final frontier for our trip.

We chose the 6-hour Adventure Trek with NOVA Alaska Guides, and it was one of the most unforgettable days of my life. Geared up with rugged mountaineering boots, harnesses, and helmets, we stepped onto a world of ancient ice. Our guide was an absolute blast, making us feel completely secure as we navigated this frozen landscape.

We journeyed across the glacier’s surface, crossing crystal-clear streams and cautiously peering (and trekking over!) into enormous, shimmering moulins—those mesmerizing blue shafts that plunge deep into the ice (with us roped in, of course!). Another thrill? Rappelling down the side of a massive glacier wall, a truly exhilarating experience.

If you’re looking for an epic, hands-on adventure that will leave you breathless, I can’t recommend this tour enough. It’s a journey that connects you to the raw, wild spirit of Alaska like nothing else.
